“The Spirit of the Race” was created in 2009 as the main focal point at Ffos Las Racecourse.

Situated in front of the Winner’s Enclosure, the sculpture captures the excitement, dynamism and motion of horse racing.

Among the reclaimed materials and objects that the sculpture are made from, are forging tongs in the horses’ legs that were sourced from former colliery worker Alan Merchant, who had made them during his apprenticeship in the coal industry many years ago.  A pertinent choice for a racecourse that has been developed from an old opencast coal mine.
